The player can still load his or her game data and continue playing. If the player finishes a stage which is the final stage of the game, the player returns to the title screen. Once a stage is finished, the next stage on the world map is revealed and the player is allowed to proceed onwards, or to revisit an earlier stage. It is not mandatory to kill enemies on earlier levels of the stage. To finish a stage, all enemies in the last level (boss area) have to be killed, inclusive of the boss (or bosses), and the player must complete the stage by dragging a character to the "MAP" sign. Supposedly there's quite a number of ways to play (Though full priest is probably impossible.), so whatever works for you works. or at least it doesn't help as much as killing the critters before they can attack Yeah, it's not terribly difficult to do that (Comp items or putting points into LP can make it happen pretty quickly.), but from what I remember seeing on the wiki (and from what I played, which was pretty far in following a party guide) offense > defense, so being able to take 200 points of damage doesn't help much if you can't kill things quickly.
